IELTS Essay Writing Task 2

Some people say that women are more peaceful than men as their characters are naturally more nurturing than aggressive. To what extent do you agree with this? What can be done to tackle this problem?

Introduction Paragraph

We human beings have a natural impulse to be peaceful and amicable in our relations with fellow human beings. Yet, sympathy and compassion are mostly regarded as feminine trait, while men are considered to be less capable of showing compassion for others. Although this argument has a modicum of truth, I completely disagree with it. Scientific evidence as well as the effect of social environment on a person’s behavior will show this.

Supporting Paragraph (1)

Commonly held stereotype and popular culture suggest that gender differences exist for empathy. However, scientific studies provide no support for that assertion. In a recent study conducted at Oxford university, scientists documented no significant gender differences in levels of empathy. This shows that the degree to which one feels another person’s pain does not depend on one’s sex.

The other important factor is the nurture of a particular human being. A woman grown up in a very abusive environment will perhaps become more aggressive herself. While a man grown up in an environment where harmonious relationship exists between family members will less likely be an abusive and violent person. This again shows that all women are not necessarily empathic and kind natured ones, and same applies to men also. It is wrong to categorize men as aggressive and females as nurturing human beings, as it all depends upon the social environment in which they grow up.
