One cannot deny the importance of English language in establishing a common ground for communication, yet people are worried about English language eclipsing many other local languages which are on the verge of extinction. As for the merits of English language, it is easily evident that it has become a lingua franca of the globalized world. It plays a dominant role in international trade, diplomacy, tourism, mass entertainment, to name a few. Since it is necessary to have a common medium of communication all throughout the world, English is the only language which can rightfully claim the title of an international language.

About the demerits of English as a common global language, the main disadvantage is the negative, and sometimes detrimental, influence on local languages. As English provides better career opportunities, non-English speakers prefer to learn English rather than focusing on learning their own native language.
