It is sometimes thought that people who travel outside of their own country are more tolerant and understanding of others. To what extent do you agree?
Why is that?
Do you see this as a positive or negative development?
In recent times, a clash of contradictory ideas has increased dramatically. People who are born into an isolated community or a classless society are often at odds with people born into a society with different values. To overcome this conflict, people should explore other people’s cultures , and that can only be accomplished by travelling. I completely agree that to cultivate a cosmopolitan outlook sympathetic to other people’s views , the essential thing to do is to travel to those places and meet inhabitants of those unknown lands.

The real benefit of traveling and encountering people with values different from our own is getting an opportunity to grow as an individual. We fall victim to misconceptions and false beliefs if we only listen to the same narrative about our culture, customs, our views toward family, work and social issues passed down to us by our parents and the community in which we live. Traveling helps us to see the world from another person’s viewpoint. This fosters greater understanding and empathy for fellow man.

Furthermore, we can have the first hand experience of the curious customs of that country which lead to a better understanding of that country. For instance, in many Middle Eastern countries it is customary for a woman to cover her head. From the viewpoint of a person living in a country with a colder climate, this seems as an absurd tradition. But when that person actually travels to that part of the world where there is excruciating heat throughout the day, he will finally understand that this custom of covering head is in reality a protection against the sunrays.
