Space planning has changed drastically over the decades in both academic institutes and office, once a series of small classrooms or offices has been transformed into a more fluid type of  studying and working. An open plan allows better communication between employees, and it is also advantageous for teachers as it allows flexibility to arrange classroom space according to the size of their class. Although there are some disadvantages of this concept, it is a welcome change which has become the new norm of this century.

Firstly, an open plan makes the communication faster between employees working together on a project. Sitting next to each other , they can communicate easily and this builds good relationships among them. This is an essential part of success of any mission, be it the Moon mission at NASA or developing a new software at Microsoft Technologies. Thus, an open space where successful outcomes can be achieved through harmonious relationships between workers and team-members is advantageous for an office environment.

Secondly, the flexibility which an open plan affords to a classroom is a very unique way to revolutionize the teaching methods. For instance, an art class requires different kind of sitting arrangement from the one required for a computer class. This way in the same classroom on alternate days different subjects can be taught without requiring separate classrooms for each subject. A school where limited space is available for arranging classrooms, this type of flexible design is helpful in accommodating different classes under one roof.
