People say that we should discuss things in order to develop critical thinking ability.

At the same time, they caution against entering into a heated argument with others. Since it doesn’t help if we only want to prove who is right, rather than what is right.

But, there are times when we like to have a candid discussion with friends. This we do to eliminate ambiguities that we have about the topic that is under discussion.

My friend Olivia and I are movie buffs. Although, she prefers to watch Hollywood movies, whereas I like seeing regional movies; we go out together to see a movie every month at our local movie theater.

It doesn’t matter whether the movie is a Hollywood movie or a regional movie.

After watching a movie, we discuss its music, cinematography, and characters in that movie.

Last month, after watching the movie Spiderman in a morning show, we went to her house as her house is quite near to the cinema hall.

The movie was good, but I didn’t like it very much. There was another movie called Heraferi that was running in theaters at that time. And I would have watched this movie if only I had known that before.

So, at her house, when we were sitting in her drawing room, her father started expounding on importance of regional cinema versus the foreign movies.

And we immediately formed two groups – one in favor of regional cinema and the other in favor of foreign cinema.

I was in her father’s group. We were in support of regional cinema.

Olivia and her elder brother John were expressing their views on importance of foreign movies.

Her father explained that regional cinema represents local culture in a holistic and meaningful manner. And these local movies help promote our traditions in foreign lands.

Olivia partially agreed with that argument. In her opinion, if we see world cinema, then only we can get rid of xenophobia that is prevalent in our societies.  And we can’t read all the famous books from literature around the world. But, we can watch movies based on them, and that way we can enjoy great literary works.

Each side put forward arguments and counter arguments one after another. But, it didn’t turn into a family feud as we all were in a jovial mood.

Meanwhile, Olivia’s mother contended that every foreign movie is itself a local movie for a particular region. And at the same time, a local movie becomes a foreign movie when showed to a foreign audience.

And thus ended our discussion when we got convinced about each other’s views.

As we were all very hungry, her mother ordered pizzas from a local pizza shop called Dominoes.

For a while, we again started talking about movies. But, the pizzas were so delicious that we soon forgot about movies and started discussing about the best pizza shops in our city.

And this time we were unanimously in favor of Dominoes, as there is no other shop that offers such delicious pizzas at a very reasonable price.

When do children normally form their own views?

In my opinion, they form their own views during their primary school years. At that age, their minds are very receptive and absorb everything that is available to them through their schoolmates, teachers, and the kids that live in the neighborhood.

Do children have strong opinions?

Yes, they do. But, the opinions get weaker as they grow up. If they are constantly bombarded with same kind of influences that promote or support a particular view, then they too will support that view.

On the other hand, if kids are given opportunities to explore different views by accessing libraries and online sources, then they will form their opinions based on concrete facts.

Of course, they will strongly support a particular view. But, they will also develop a flexible attitude towards other people’s opinions.

Should parents request their kids to obey them?

It’s a very difficult question to answer. In certain cultures, kids are treated as the properties of their parents.

Here, they have to compulsorily surrender to their parents’ wishes.

But, this is not an ideal way.

Kids should be taught this virtue of obeying their elders in a gentle way. When they disobey, a mild rebuke is enough to get them onto a right path, but never a corporal punishment should be meted out.

In what industry do you think communication is a necessary skill?

I think all the industries need people with powerful communication skills.

Good communicators can expedite the negotiations with clients, whereas lack of communication can jeopardize the success of business deals.

Having said that, I believe that there are some industries such as the IT industry needs this type of skill more than any other industries. They have to deal directly with their customers, and this requires better communication skills to convince the clients.
