Our visionary Prime Minister launched a nationwide cleanliness drive called ‘Clean India Mission’.
Last year, our school also launched a mission to spread awareness about cleanliness among students in our city.
As part of that mission, there was an elocution competition organized by our school.
At the end of that competition, our city mayor Mr. John Simpson delivered a lecture on the importance of cleanliness in our life. He also emphasized that a city should be beautiful in appearance, so that tourists would come to visit it in great numbers.
When I heard those words from him, I was inspired to do something to make my city clean and beautiful.
At first, I thought it would be a Herculean task for an individual student like me.
Then I thought that I should not feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the task.
I decided to start a cleanliness drive in my locality. My friends Jay and Joseph came forward to help me.
Soon, we found some more students to support this cause.
When we told our school principal Mr. Patrick Jackob, he too liked this idea and asked us to move ahead.
Initially, some parents were against this extra-curricular activity.
After much persuasion by our principal, they conceded.
We chose 2nd October – the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi for this drive.
Mahatma Gandhi was himself a proponent of cleanliness.
So on this day we decided to go to a nearby park to spread awareness about cleanliness among joggers who come there early in the morning.
For this day, we had started making preparations a few weeks ago.
We got some leaflets and banners printed with the messages of cleanliness and practical tips for keeping the city clean.
No need to say that our principal sponsored this event.
When we went to the park, morning walkers ignored us first.
They didn’t pay attention to what we were saying.
We saw that too much garbage was lying around and the park space was littered with plastic waste.
We started collecting the garbage and putting it into dustbins.
Soon the public started following our example, they also took part in this activity enthusiastically.
Some people took selfies and we also took some pics.
After a while the garden was neat and clean.
We distributed leaflets among the people.
We came back and uploaded pics on our social media profiles with clean India Green India hashtag.
The post became viral instantly, and soon people started asking us “When will be the next cleanliness drive?”
So we received an overwhelming response to our activity, and we decided to arrange it on 25th December.
And we also successfully arranged that drive on that day.
We decided that we would arrange this cleanliness drive every year.
My father gave me a fountain pen as he was feeling very proud at that moment. My mom also couldn’t keep herself from giving me a new wristwatch as a gift.
At school, our principal gave us each an autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi as a gift.
These gifts made my day, and I will always keep them as souvenirs with me.

IELTS SPEAKING TEST
Part 3
How do you get along with people around you, especially the people of your neighborhood?
I believe in the message of Bible which says : ‘Love Thy Neighbor’.
If we feel sympathy for people who live around us, we can better understand their emotions and their needs.
Then we can understand their perspective, and this will lead to a mutual admiration for each other.
If we constantly argue with them, or contradict their view point, soon we create animosity between us and them.
A neighborhood in countryside is more family-like than a neighborhood in a city. What do you think?
Yes, I completely agree with this view. In a city, people always compete with each other.
They can’t digest if their next door neighbor achieves something or makes progress in his/her field.
On the other hand, villagers celebrate success of their neighbors as their own success.
For them, the entire village is a family. One member of family achieves success, and it becomes an occasion for all the people to celebrate it.
Do you think children should be taught to cooperate with their friends?
I don’t believe in forceful teaching of cooperation with others.
Instead, we should set an example of our own cooperative nature before our kids.
Kids will imitate this and they will do the same with their friends.
If we don’t cooperate with others, then our children will also behave in the similar fashion.
Before preaching something to someone, we must put that into practice.
