I am fond of going out with friends on weekends and during holidays. We go to malls, movie-theatres, and amusement parks on such one-day trips.

And sometimes when there is no one to accompany me, I go on a solo trip too.

But, I must confess that I like the company of friends more than I like my own.

Last year, I was totally surprised when my best friend Harsh invited me to his village Dharampur for a one-day trip.

This Harsh is a very interesting personality. He comes from a very affluent family. And he runs a successful textile business that spans across the south east Asian subcontinent.

It was Harsh’s birthday , and he wanted to go to his village to celebrate the birthday in his ancestral house

I couldn’t say ‘No’ to him as I knew it would be a very exciting journey.

Dharampur is around 150 miles from my city. And Harsh being a brilliant raconteur, I was quite sure that the car journey with him wouldn’t have a single dull moment in it.

And there was one more reason to accept the proposal.

Harsh is a happy-go-lucky person, and we never have to foot the bill for our trips whenever he is with us.

So who would say ‘No’ to such an offer?

We went to Dharampur in Harsh’s new Tesla car. The car moved smoothly on roads, and the journey was quite comfortable.

First, we went to his village house. It would be appropriate to call it a ‘grand mansion’ as it is around four to six times bigger than any village house I have ever seen.

There we celebrated his birthday with his family members. We enjoyed the birthday feast in the garden that is outside his house. Harsh’s mother made delicious Gujarati dishes, and everyone praised her culinary skills

Then we went to his farmhouse that is on the outskirts of the village. They have set up a mini home theater there, so we watched a Bollywood movie there. Of course, there were lots of homemade snacks to munch on while watching the movie.

In the evening, we dived into the swimming pool that was in the backyard of the farmhouse. It brought back the memories of our childhood when we splashed around in our local pool.

And then, we had a hearty dinner at the farmhouse as once again Harsh’s mother treated us with some more Gujarati delicacies.

The next day, we drove back to our city very early in the morning.

Thus, it was a memorable day for me. This day out in a village made me determined to go to my own village Rampur. So when my birthday came, I invited Harsh to come to my village. This time I played  host to Harsh, and Harsh too enjoyed a lot.

Part 3

Do people like to spend their leisure time out in your country?

Yes, they do. And pandemic has made them more inclined toward spending time outside the confines of the walls of their homes.

How do people spend their leisure time in your country?

It is a very difficult question to answer. It depends upon the amount of leisure-time they get. And also it depends upon their age group too.

For instance, students and young people have more time to enjoy. Whereas, working class people get that only on weekends and during holidays.

We as a nation love going to see a movie in theaters. So, we can say that cinema-going is our favorite pastime.

These days people also prefer going on a one-day picnic to a nearby place. But, this is only limited to urban population only.

How does technology affect the way people spend their leisure time?

It has significantly changed people’s way of spending their leisure time. Nowadays, people of all age groups remain glued to their mobile screens.

Instead of going out and watch a movie or a cricket match, they stay at home and watch it on their mobile screens.

But, there are some positive changes too. People now can communicate easily with the others who share the same interests. This way they form small communities and plan various creative activities together.

Do you think only old people have time for leisure?

It is a misconception that prevails even today.

Yes, we can see that old people have less responsibilities and more free time at hand.

But, we should not overlook the fact that old age brings many ailments. And that is why it is wrong to assume that a bedridden old lady has more time to enjoy her days.
