I have encountered many incidents when people go out of their way to help fellow human beings.

But, there are very few among them who keep their charity works undisclosed.

I am very proud of having such a benevolent friend in my life. His name is Harsh.

I would like to add that magnanimity is in his blood, as he has inherited this virtue from his father.

His father Mr. Shaileshbhai is a well-known industrialist.

He is also famous for his philanthropic activities.

Talking about Harsh, he himself doesn’t earn any money as he is just a student like me.

But, being a son of a rich father, he receives a good amount of pocket money from his father every month.

Harsh uses this money not on any luxurious items or expensive things.

Instead, he donates money to orphanages and old-age homes.

One day I asked him, why is he keen on doing charity works.

He told me that his grandfather inspired him to do this by telling him the story of King Karn from the epic Mahabharat.

King Karn never refused to give alms to whoever came to him, be it a prince or a pauper.

So, he tries to emulate King Karn.

Other people do show-off by posting charity works on social media. He abhors publicity on social media.

One incident that I want to recollect just to illustrate his way of doing help secretly.

One day our classmate Rudra was crying in a corner of our playground. Rudra couldn’t pay his school fees, and our school management was about to expel him from school.

When Harsh got to know about this, he rushed to the principal’s office. He called his father from there and told his father that he would pay Rudra’s fees.

He also requested the principal not to tell Rudra anything about this.

I felt very proud of Harsh on that day. And I decided that whatever we do to help others, we must do it without having any expectations from others.

It doesn’t matter whether the person who receives help doesn’t know about our charity work. Because God Almighty always sees us and showers His grace on us.

Part 3

People these days are becoming more selfish. Do you think so?

In my opinion, there is a tendency among people in this 21st century to think about their own motives only.

For such people, others are just ladders that can be used to fulfill their own motives.

In the past, people were kind to their fellow human beings. Altruism was more common in the past than it is now.

Why are some people ready to help others?

I can’t point out any specific reason for this now.

But, I must say that this must have something to do with the environment they grew up in.

When parents are sympathetic and loving towards children, children also imbibe these virtues in their life.
