Sample Answer
Usually I like watching Bollywood movies , since these movies have characters that we can easily relate to.
These stories seem like our own stories and we love watching them on the big screen.
But there are Hollywood movies that transport you to another world with their state-of-art visual effects and thrilling background score. These movies are in a class of their own.
I admire many Hollywood movies , but my favorite is a movie called ‘John Carter’. It’s a sci-fi movie that is based on a 1912 novel called ‘Princess of Mars’ by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
This movie was released in 2012. I was in the final year of my dental school at that time, and one Friday I went to see this movie at Rajhans theatre with my friend Harsh.
This movie was a complete surprise for me, as it didn’t have any famous stars in it. Later, I found out that actor Taylor Kitsch was in the lead role , and there was this beautiful actress named Lynn Collins who played his love interest. I don’t know who directed the movie as I never pay much attention to that.
The story was like this :
A veteran civil war soldier called John Carter is accidentally transported to a barren planet called Barsoom which is just like our Mars.
Here he meets a damsel in distress – Princess Deja Thorres. Princess Deja wants to save her planet from the evil king Tars who threatens to destroy her planet if she doesn’t accept his marriage proposal.
John Carter acts as her savior and kills Tars. He marries the princess and thus ends the story.
This is a typical adventure story in which a hero beats the villain and marries a beautiful princess. It was quite melodramatic, but the real fun is the grand visuals of the movie, especially the fight scenes in which they have used VFX .
Other than that, there is a beautiful message at the end of the movie.
Our hero, John Carter, advises his young nephew to do three things in life to make it a meaningful one :
‘Be curious, fall in love , and write a book’
For me this was a very inspirational moment. I can never forget this lovely message.
And yes, neither can I forget how gorgeous Lynn Collins looked in her royal outfit on the big screen. I have never seen a stunning princess like her.
Having said that, I must say that there was no chemistry between the lead characters. Of course, it was an action movie and no emphasis was laid on romance, but they could have done better.
Also there was no character development in the movie. But I can’t blame the director as he has to deal with time constraints that a book writer doesn’t have to worry about.
Overall, it was a job greatly done, and I would give 10/10, if not for the story then for the stunning Lynn Collins.. our Princess Deja Thorres.
