Do you often watch films?
No, my professional duties as well as some family responsibilities make it difficult for me to watch movies regularly. Occasionally I see a movie on TV , especially on Sundays when I can enjoy it with my family.
What kind of films do you like?
There is not any particular genre that I can say I like most. But if you ask me, then I would pick ‘action movies’ as my favorite ones.
Are foreign films popular in your country?
No, foreign films have a very limited audience if you compare it with viewers who like regional movies.
Do women and men usually like the same kind of films?
No, women like family dramas and romantic comedies (rom-coms). While men prefer action movies. This is my opinion.
Perhaps we may find women who like action-packed performances of South Indian movie stars. And there might be men who enjoy watching an old classic that has a female protagonist .
Talk about a film you enjoy
- what type of film it is
- when you first saw it
- what it is about
- why you like it
I usually prefer watching a South-Indian action movie , rather than a dull Bollywood romantic movie when I want to have a good time after a long tiring week.
I don’t get the chance to do that often. But, luckily, I got it some 3 years ago when it was my birthday.
We all family members celebrated that day by going to our favorite restaurant, and after that we went to a multiplex to watch the movie Bahubali.
This was an action-movie, and not just me, but my son also loved it.
The movie had this eponymous protagonist who fought against an evil king and killed him.
The story is just like the one we read in our story-books for children.
But, it had grand visuals that we had not seen before in any other Indian movies.
There were war scenes that were very exciting to watch. And there was this hero called Prabhas who did justice to his role of Bahubali.
I would give 10 on 10 to Prabhas’s performance. And I can also say the same for the villain Rana Daggubaati.
As I believe that the stronger the villain, the greater the chance for the hero to prove his heroism.
And there were other interesting characters too in that movie. I liked the character of Katappa who was Babhubali’s sidekick.
I also liked the brief romance between Bahubali and his love-interest Avantika.
And our Indian movies are incomplete without songs. This movie had some beautiful songs that I enjoyed very much.
Overall, it was a nice movie that had all the elements to make it a blockbuster movie of that year. And we all loved to see it on big screen.
Do you think subtitles are better than dubbing for foreign films?
In my opinion, the opposite is true. Dubbing is quite better as it allows us to enjoy the movie completely.
Watching a movie and reading the subtitles simultaneously is not something that I would like to do.
Why do some people prefer watching a film in the cinema rather than at home?
A movie theatre has the facility of a very high quality sound system. At home, it is generally not possible to have that kind of sound unless you have a home-theatre system.
And the grand visuals of an action movie look better on a 70mm screen than on a TV.
What makes a film successful?
There is no particular formula to make a film successful.
Sometimes even big movie starts give a flop movie. And it is not always a movie with a good storyline that becomes a hit at the box-office.
But, I would say that movies that entertains the audience completely have good chances of become blockbusters.
Do you think film stars are more important than special effects?
Yes, without them the special effects are useless.
Movie stars, with their acting skills and their magnetic persona, attract the movie-goers to cinema halls.
Special effects are important , but they can’t replace the movie-stars.
What kinds of films are not suitable for children?
Children have very receptive brains.
If they watch violent movies then it makes a very bad impact on their developing brains.
Also they should not watch movies that have abusive language in it.
These movies are not for a young mind.
