Assignment Day 28

IELTS Speaking Test Part 2

Describe a time you used your cellphone/smartphone to do something important

You should say:

  • What happened
  • When it happened
  • How important the cellphone/smartphone was
  • How you felt about the experience

In my opinion, smartphone is the greatest technological invention of the 21st century.

Its uses range from facilitating communication to doing online banking, and online learning to online shopping.

In short, this small device encompasses a wide range of possibilities.

Last year, when the pandemic was raging across India, people were desperately searching for a nearby vaccination center where they could get a shot of corona vaccine.

Our government had developed an ingenious app called Co-Win that helped us to book our appointment slot online.

But there is something painful about my country. Many elderly people either don’t have a smartphone or they don’t know how to use a smartphone.

Our neighbor Mr. Shyamlal is a septuagenarian Sanskrit scholar who faced this problem when he had to book his 1st appointment for the corona vaccine on his smartphone.

His smartphone was not working properly, and he couldn’t figure out what was the reason behind it.

He asked for my help. At first, I thought about taking his phone to the service center and get it repaired.

But, then I thought about not wasting the time, and first getting him a slot booked on the Co-Win app.

So I took out my smartphone, which was Moto G56 – the latest version of G series by Motorola.

I opened the Co-win app on my phone, and I did the registration process for Mr. Shyamlal.

Luckily, we got a slot for him at our nearby health center. I also downloaded the receipt for the registration on my phone and mailed it to Mr. Shyamlal’s email id.

The next day, I went to my office and printed out the receipt and gave it to Mr. Shyamlal when I came home.

Now, it was a very critical time for all of us in India.

If I had not booked the appointment for Mr. Shyamlal, he would not have received the vaccine shot. And when I imagine the consequences – it sends a shudder down my spine.

Today, Mr. Shyamlal has received his booster dose – that is the 3rd dose of this vaccine. And there is no need to say that appointment for this dose was also booked by me on my smartphone.

So I feel very great when I could help my neighbor through a wonderful device that should be named as a lifesaver for its wonderful activities.

Part 3

What do you usually do with a cellphone?

Honestly speaking, I use my cellphone to forward messages on WhatsApp which is a social media app.

I forward jokes and inspirational quotes to my family members and close acquaintances.

Other than that, I use it as a music player and play old Bollywood movie songs on it at night.

What are the differences between young people and old people when using a cellphone?

There is a world of  difference between the youth and the old when it comes to mobile phone use.

Elderly people spend time using WhatsApp and Facebook – mostly forwarding messages and quotes.

Whereas, young people don’t limit their use of phones to social media. They do all kinds of financial transaction on their phones. They use them for online learning, and they also use to read books.

For young people the mobile phone is like a mini computer.

Which one is more important, using a cellphone to make phone calls or to read messages?

It is very difficult to answer this question. Some professions require long telephonic conversations. Or some people love talking to other people on their phones. In these situations, a short message won’t be helpful to such people.

But, youngsters have changed the rules of communication. They prefer texting each other. They don’t prefer long telephonic conversations.

Do you think there should be a law to stop people from making phone calls in public?

No, a law isn’t required to stop people from talking loudly on their phones in public.

People will always find loopholes in this law and get away with doing noisy telephonic conversations in public.

A law is never a solution to keep something in check.

IELTS Speaking Test Part 2

Describe a way/change that helps you save a lot of time

You should say:

  • What it is
  • How you implemented it
  • How difficult it is
  • And explain how you feel about the way/change

In this 21st century time is the new currency. We all have been given the same amount of time for each day- that is 24 hours.

But, we don’t use it wisely, and then we complain about (grumble about) not having enough time.

I read in the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi that we all must respect the value of time, and we must implement new methods so that we can allot our time to some fruitful activities rather than do something that wastes our precious time.

I work at a co-operative bank that was founded in 1969.

Although the calendar has changed many times since 1969, our management still seems to be using the old calendar.

I mean to say their mindset is quite antiquated

And it is quite difficult to convince them to change their ways.

They ask us to use old typewriters at home to type official documents which is a very time consuming process.

This is the age of computers and laser printers. We can have multiple copies of a document in a jiffy.

A typewriter can’t perform this fast. And I always requested my seniors to replace the typewriters with laptops. But my request always fell on deaf ears.

Then last year I decided to buy a laptop for myself.

I bought a new Lenovo X34d laptop from the Reliance Digital Mall.

Initially it was quite difficult for me to switch to a laptop from my old typewriter.

A typewriter needs heavy keystrokes whereas a laptop doesn’t require that much pressure.

And laptop comes with programs like MS-Office that I needed to learn.

I took computer lessons from a teacher who taught me MS-word and MS-Excel.

It took me around 2 months to learn it all.

And then, the magic happened. Whenever my seniors asked me to type a document or make copies of a document, I would finish it before the deadline.

I feel happy about my decision. If I had waited for my seniors to give me a laptop, then I would never have purchased it myself and I also would not have learned MS-Office programs that have made my work quite easier than it used to be before the laptop.

Part 3

What can people do to save time?

There are many ways that can help people save time.

The best way to take help of technology. For instance, writing letters is tedious and time consuming. Using email would be the wise strategy to save time.

And making a list of our daily activities is also helpful. This way we can identify the activities that consumes too much time. Once we know which activity is useless then we can eliminate it from our daily schedule, and thus save time.

Does technology help people save time? How and why?

Technology is the synonym for time-saver. From transport to communication, from cooking to cleaning, in every field technology has tremendously helped us to save our time.

Do you think parents should be responsible for teaching children to save time?

Yes, because parents are the ones who are responsible for inculcating good habits into their children.

Although they are not solely responsible as teachers also share this responsibility to teach kids the importance of time saving.

Do people who can manage time well become successful more easily?

Yes, all the successful people will unanimously agree with this statement.

They all believe in time management. And their success is the testimony to the fact that they all used time wisely to achieve their goals.
