Assignment Day 26

IELTS Speaking Task 2

Describe a person who contributes to the society

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • How you knew him/her
  • What type of work he/she does
  • And explain why you think he/she contributes to the society

There are people who have a strong social conscience, and their goal in life is to make society a better living place for the other people.

At the same time, there are people who knowingly or unknowingly make great contributions, but they remain unknown throughout their lives.

For instance, many people don’t know the name of the scientist who invented the vaccine against this menacing corona virus. His/her contribution is a great one. But we don’t know the name, and that is a pity

But, not all contributors share the same fate

There is one Gujarati philanthropist named Nitin Jani who is a shining example of a great contributor.

Mr. Jani is a very generous person who believes in helping the poor and needy through giving them financial aid.

And he also believes in emancipation of women, especially those living in rural areas. So he runs a campaign for educating women and giving them an opportunity to pursue higher studies.

Two years ago, nobody knew who this guy was. He ran a YouTube channel where he used to upload comedy videos.

But then, in the year 2020, he started a campaign to help the homeless people in the rural areas of Gujarat.

His campaign became quite popular, and in just a few days, his followers increased dramatically on YouTube and other social media.

So when I saw his Facebook page for the first time, I was quite amused to see that this guy had more than a million followers on his Facebook page.

Out of curiosity, I started exploring his page, and I was very much impressed by the range of altruistic activities he did.

Mr. Jani has helped more than 2000 homeless families to build their own houses. Even he is there to help whenever a natural catastrophe occurs in Gujarat. He actively takes part in rehabilitation activities in the flood affected areas.

He is only 29 years old, and he is the driving force behind many social welfare programs.

His source of income is his social media pages. But, I am pretty sure that he must be getting donations from donors all around the world. These donors know that the money given to Mr. Jani will surely be used in a noble cause

When I think about Mr. Jani and his generous nature, I feel very much inspired to do some selfless acts of service

Though my work can never be as big as what Mr. Jani does, I can still make my little contribution by giving alms to the poor whenever I come across them.

If we all take some small steps, then the whole humanity can leap forward towards a better future.

Part 3

What jobs are well-paid?

In my opinion, jobs in the IT sectors are the highest paid jobs. And the next comes the jobs in the health sector where doctors are the highest earning professionals.

Talking about my personal experience, bankers are also the ones who draw a 5 or 6 figure salary if they are working at an international bank.

What are the changes in working conditions?

Working conditions are getting better these days, if you compare it with the working conditions that existed a few years ago.

Previously, there were long working hours and less time for breaks and refreshment.

Today, companies have understood that better working conditions would translate into better productivity.

What are the impacts of epidemic on the work environment?

Whenever an epidemic breaks out, people tend to distance themselves from others. This affects work environment also.

Instead of sitting together, employees prefer to work in silos or work from home if their work doesn’t require their physical presence at their workplace.

Do you think younger people should be lower-paid than older people?

To be very honest, I think the exact opposite should happen. Young people have dreams in their eyes. They also have family responsibilities. So, they need more money than older people who don’t need that much money and are often living a simple life.

IELTS Speaking Task 2

Describe a rule that you don’t like

You should say:

  • What it is
  • Why you don’t like it
  • How others feel about the rule
  • And explain whether you have followed the rule

In our society, there are some basic rules that are set by government. And if we don’t follow them, then chaos and anarchy happens.

Likewise, a company sets some general rules for its employees to facilitate smooth functioning

In general, rules are good if they are they are made for the common good. And people benefit from them if they abide by the rules.

But, there are times when we are oppressed by some stringent rules, and we want to flout those rules as we can’t see any benefit in adhering to those rules.

Let me narrate my own experience.

I work at Rampur Commercial Bank which is the No.1 Bank in my city Ahmedabad.

There was a very energetic working environment at the bank until the arrival of our new general manager Mr. Patel.

Mr. Patel is a very strict taskmaster. He has worked in the Army- a clerical job only. But he thinks that military discipline should be implemented in every workplace.

So when he first addressed our bank staff at our monthly meeting, he announced that he would lay down some new rules that would increase the productivity and help the employees to achieve their targets.

Then he read out a list of the new rules. It seemed as if these were authoritarian rules.

There was a lot of commotion about such stringent and arbitrary rules. But, we employees were helpless.

One such rule was the compulsory dress code for the bank employees. Mr. Patel believed that white is the color that boosts confidence. So according to the new dress code, we all staff members would have to wear white dresses on all workdays.

My colleagues were not comfortable with this new rule, as no one likes to wear the same color on every day. This bank is not a fashion house. But we are human beings and we like to wear colorful clothes.

I was also not happy about it, and I registered my protest by writing an email to Mr. Patel. But I got no reply from him.

There were two options for me. Either I could do what others were doing or wear colorful clothes just to show my displeasure

But, when I consulted my wife about this matter, she advised me to wait for a while. In her opinion, it is not helpful to enrage our superiors at our workplace.

And I followed her advice. It felt very awkward initially, but gradually I started liking the color white. I experimented by wearing different shades of white, and I truly enjoyed it.

But, we did not have to wear white clothes all the time.

After a few months, Mr. Patel was transferred to another branch. And we all heaved a sigh of relief

Perhaps the rule was quite idiosyncratic or ridiculous. But it was not entirely wrong. It was set with good intentions, and I can’t say exactly whether it was helpful or not.

Part 3

What are the rules students should follow at school?

Students should abide by the disciplinary rules set by their schools.

These includes following the dress code, coming to school on time, and obeying the instructions and completing the homework given by their teachers.

Are the rules at school good or bad? Why?

If I were a student, I am pretty sure that I would say that rules at school are always bad.

But, today when I look back upon those days, I feel gratitude towards my teachers for making me a disciplined person just by making me follow the rules during my school days.

These rules, are just like a bitter pill. You have to swallow it, whether you like it or not.

In the long run, it always does good.

What rules should children follow at home?

Children must wake up early in the morning and they must obey their parents.

Apart from these, they should limit their TV watching time and spend time doing outdoor activities.

How are people punished when parking at a wrong spot?

If you ask me, I would say that in my country people are punished for parking at a right place. Because although there is a punishment stipulated in the rule book for this, there is hardly any policeman who would punish people for such violation of rules.

But I have heard that in countries like the UK and the US, people are fined heavily if they park their cark at places other than the allotted parking spaces.
