IELTS Speaking Task 2
Describe something that you do to keep fit and healthy
You should say
- What it is
- When you do it
- Who you do it with
- And explain why you think this method is important
In this 21st century, we have to keep ourselves fit and healthy in order to survive the menace of lifestyle related diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. (learn the correct pronunciation of “menace” )
And if we are physically fit then we can combat stress at workplace. (combat occupational stress)
For this, we can do different exercises. I like swimming and I have read somewhere that swimming is the best exercise for the whole body.
But, this pandemic has made it difficult to go to a public swimming pool and swim in the company of unmasked strangers.
The situation has now improved, and it is relatively safe now to go to a swimming pool. But, I am still a bit apprehensive.
So for the last 2 years I have been taking a walk in the public garden that is just a few blocks away from my house.
I read this in Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography that brisk walking in the early morning for 20 minutes is very good for health.
Mahatma Gandhi himself is the shining example of how walking is beneficial to health.
He noted that he never fell ill during the days when he was practicing as a lawyer. This was due to his daily walks to and from his office. His colleagues would hardly walk from their homes to their offices. As a result, they would frequently fall it. Whereas, Mahatma Gandhi always remained fit and active.
I apply the same principal to my life.
It is not possible for me to go walking to my workplace.
But I walk in the park everyday. At around 6.30 in the morning I go there, and then walk for at least 20 minutes. Then I do meditation for 10 minutes.
There is serenity in the atmosphere at that time, and I find it very relaxing to do meditation after a brisk walk.
Sometimes my wife or my son accompanies me during the morning walk. And it is quite funny that at this age, I still walk faster than my son.
He always wants me to slow-down and walk in a leisurely manner.
But I would follow Gandhiji’s advice, and brisk walking is the proper form of exercise.
And how can I forget the importance of healthy diet that complements exercise!
Just outside that park, there stands a juice-seller where I have fresh tomato-soup and orange juice on alternate days.
After my sojourn in the park, I go to this juice-seller and give me glass of soup or juice.
This morning walk sessions are now incorporated into my routine, and unless I am out of the town, I never break this routine.
This keeps me fit and active, and as a banker I need a sound mind that can only stay in a sound and healthy body.
IELTS Speaking Test Part 3
How do children and old people keep fit and healthy?
There is one striking difference here. Kids don’t think too much about staying fit, yet they play all the time and do intense physical activities that keep them fit.
On the other hand, old people want to keep themselves fit as they don’t want to suffer from ailments of old age such as joint-pain and others.
Therefore old people do mild exercises at home or in public gardens. Sometimes they do it on their own, and sometimes they do it under an expert’s guidance.
What do people normally do to keep fit and healthy in your country?
This concept of keeping oneself fit is quite popular in India. Especially after the pandemic, people are getting more serious about taking measures to stay fit and active.
Taking a morning walk or jogging in the park is the most popular activity.
Some people go to gyms and others, who can afford it, go to health-clubs where they play a sport like tennis, badminton or basketball. Also there are public and private swimming pools for people to use them and stay healthy.
How can parents help and guide their kids to keep healthy?
Parents can encourage to eat green-leafy vegetables and stay away from fast-foods.
And it is also very helpful if parents motivate their children to take part in sports.
Kids should be convinced , not coerced.
Do you think it is a good way for governments to use the power of idol to help people to build health awareness?
Anything that is done with good motives and has no harmful consequences is always acceptable.
If the government uses the power of idol, and it is beneficial to people to improve their health, then there should be no opposition to that.
IELTS Speaking Test 1
Emails
Do you often write(or, send) emails?
Yes, I do. My post as a bank manager requires me to write emails to my colleagues and superiors at my bank
What do you write about?
This is usually official correspondence related to my bank. Sometimes I write emails to institutions. Just a couple of weeks ago I wrote to the IDP regarding the name correction in my IELTS registration form.
Do you think emails are useful?
Of course, there is nothing more useful than the electronic mails, commonly known as “emails”.
The best thing about them, according to me, is the convenience. We can read them when it is convenient. Unlike letters, we don’t have to worry about carrying them with us. We can simply open our inbox on our smartphone or laptop and read them even after a year.
What kinds of emails do you send and receive?
As I am a banker, my correspondence is mostly official one.
I receive emails from clients – both compliments and complaints I receive in equal measure.
I reply to these clients and try my best to give them satisfactory answers.
And I also correspond with my colleagues through emails.
Do you think it is a good thing that some companies send out letters/spam emails for the purpose of advertising?
I am a banker, and I am in favor of sending this type of emails, as it is part of our promotional strategies at my bank.
Personally, I would not like getting unnecessary emails about products that I am not interested in.
But, when I think as a banker, I can’t help using promotional emails as a means of doing marketing.
How often do you write letters?
I must admit that I haven’t written a handwritten letter since my college years.
I know it is very amusing to send an receive handwritten letters, but frankly speaking, I can’t find them fascinating as other people do. Emails are much better and faster.
What do you write about?
As I said, I don’t write handwritten letters anymore.
During school-days I wrote letters to my relatives and friends on special occasions such as Diwali festival – our Hindu New Year. These were short New Year messages with some decorative images drawn by me and my sister.
On what occasions do you write letters?
Those childhood letters were mainly for festival greetings.
We had telephone, and this helped when we wanted to have conversations with our relatives.
So, instead of writing letters, we simply dialled their phone numbers.
Do you like writing letters to your relatives and friends?
I actually prefer sending messages on social media sites such as WhatsApp and Facebook.
Perhaps writing letters has its own charm. But, I like sending colorful images, smiley stickers and short videos to my friends.
In a letter, I can’t include a colorful picture.
Do you and your friend keep in touch by letter?
No, we don’t. We would chat on WhatsApp if we have some leisure time. It is instant and quite easier.
How do you keep in touch with your friends and relatives?
I personally believe that one should stay in touch with one’s family members and friends.
I make regular visits to their houses on weekends and on festival days.
I don’t depend upon social media or telephonic conversation for strengthening our relations.
