IELTS Writing Task 2 (Essay)
Some people think that only the government can make significant changes in the society, while others think that individuals can have a lot of influence. What is your opinion?
Individuals
- Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela made a lasting impact on the collective conscience of people
- They started movements that won freedom for their people.
- Businessmen like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates revolutionized the software industry
- Environmental activists like Greta Thunberg spread awareness about the climate crisis
Governments
On the other hand,
- Governments are powerless if people don’t comply with the laws
- Government can only enact laws, but it can’t enforce them if people do not cooperate.
- No revolution in industry or any other field has ever been started by a government.
Public libraries will soon no longer be housed in a building as all facilities and books will be available online for all to access.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of public libraries only existing online.
Advantages
Online books make virtual libraries.
Readers have easy access to hundreds of books
Saves the cost of maintaining a huge library-staff
No time restrictions to browse the online books
Disadvantages
Booklovers lose a favorite place to take refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city
Librarians lose their jobs
No chance of serendipitously finding a nice book
Physical books are issued for a limited duration. So you read faster. E-books eliminate these time-restraints. So you read in a leisurely manner and hardly finish a book in a month.
Some people think that poverty is the reason behind most crimes. Do you agree or disagree?
Disagree
It’s a false belief that poverty is the root cause of all unlawful activities.
If you make a list of top 10 criminals of the world, you will hardly find criminal who comes from a poor household.
I agree that poverty denies a poor person the opportunities to make his/her life better.
But, not every poor person chooses to become a criminal.
If this were so, India and other Asian countries, where millions of poor people live, would have been rife with criminal activities.
On the contrary, poor people choose the path of hard work. They eke out a living from manual labor, but they rarely choose to get rich by unscrupulous means.
The real cause, in my opinion, is the failure to inculcate virtues into kids by their parents.
A rich father is as much responsible for his criminal son as a poor father is responsible for his well-educated son.
